Welcome to Weird Grammar Weekly! This class is all about four parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, and adjectives. Wait! I know what you're thinking: "I learned this in first grade!"

We're going beyond the basics here. Did you know there are NINE different types of nouns alone??? So if you're thinking you're too old for parts of speech, you're not. High schoolers still start the school year with parts of speech. It's true.

Grammar isn't the most exciting thing in the world to people, unless you ask an English teacher. 🙄 But in THIS class, we're combining weird and random facts about weird and random things with those boring parts of speech. It's grammar class with a dash of weirdness. 😎

So not only are you practicing your grammar skills, but you can also impress your friends with random facts about armpits! It's a win-win.

Here's how it works:
STEP 1️⃣
Sticking to the schedule below, we'll start by defining that week's part of speech and sharing plenty of examples. I’ll need your help filling in all the examples before we learn our weird facts. Participation is encouraged! You'll be writing right on your screen. With your mouse or finger, not a Sharpie, got it? We'll be learning lots of grammar rules, which clearly prove how weird the English language can be. You'll have a handout for every class.
STEP 2️⃣
It's time to learn some weird facts about that week's chosen topic. I have some strange but true info on everything from noses to narwhals to volcanoes and more! It's your job to pick out the correct words (all of the nouns, for example) from the facts displayed on screen. We’ll take turns finding words until we've found them all.
STEP 3️⃣
We'll end class with a game of Mad Libs! I'll have a short & silly story about our topic with some words missing (whichever part of speech we're learning). You and your classmates will give me a list of words that I'll put into the story for an ultimately weird result. It's always a good idea to leave class with a smile on your face.

After class, I'll be sending you some grammar goodies!
-Weird Grammar Guide: I have additional practice in an attached printable so you can keep the weirdness going throughout the week.
-Weird Grammar Gazette: With each week you attend, I'll be sending you a copy of the weird facts we learned in class, so by the end you'll have a booklet of weirdness. You can use these to practice as well! See if you can remember all of the words we marked in class, and then check the answer key.
-Weird Grammar Graphic: With each class, you'll earn a few letters to spell out each part of speech. Once you collect all the letters, you'll have a finished image! You should definitely frame it. It's awesome looking. You'll get a new graphic for each part of speech.

We'll do it again the following week with the next topic on the schedule. What exactly are these weird topics, you ask? Behold!

If you’re looking for the rest of the parts of speech or other grammar concepts, check for follow-up classes in the future. The next class in this series will cover the remaining parts of speech. I'll add a link here once it's available.

IMPORTANT INFO:
***This class builds!***
By the time we get to adjectives, students should be familiar with the previously covered parts of speech. Keep in mind, however, each part of speech has four lessons, so even if you miss one week, you haven't missed an entire part of speech.
***The content will repeat!***
This class has a total of 16 weeks of content (plus one week of review after that), which repeats upon completion. So while there is no official end date for this class, there is an end of NEW content.
***Enrolling late***
You may enroll late, but if you've already missed 2 or more parts of speech, it would be a better idea to wait until the next start date. The above schedule will start over in January.
***Pausing your subscription***
You have the flexibility to choose what weeks you want to attend. Maybe you don't need any verb practice, for example, or you're going on vacation--no problem! Take a week off. Just remember, pausing does not hold your spot!

Students learn parts of speech every single year. Chapter one of most, if not all, grammar workbooks start there. Even the high school seniors I taught in public school started the year with the parts of speech. So while these four parts of speech are typically learned in early elementary school, we're expanding on them for this age group. I've used a combination of Grade 7 and Grade 9 grammar workbooks (McDougal Littell, Inc.) to choose what types of nouns, adjectives, etc. to cover.

As a former middle and high school English teacher in the public school system, I've taught many lessons on grammar, always looking for fun ways to get students to love grammar as much as I do.
On Outschool, learners enjoy the small class size, my sense of humor (I think?), and the laid back atmosphere of my classes. And some of them end up staying in my weekly classes for years.
Literally.
