They will call on another learner in the classroom to continue reading as they and other readers follow along. In this class, we will explore the incredible life and achievements of Mae Jemison, a scientist, artist, and activist. Through an engaging informational text about Jemison's life, education, and pioneering space ventures, we will develop strategies to reinforce learners' comprehension skills through discussions, interactive activities, and reflection questions. Learners will have the opportunity to write their responses about the significance of Jemison's contributions to science and society.

Lesson 2:
An Excerpt from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
In this comprehensive class, we will collaboratively read an excerpt from the classic story, The Wizard of Oz. While reading, we'll pay special attention to the sensory details that help create the settings. Using a collaborative approach, we will discuss and analyze the details in the passage and use them to compare and contrast the characters. By answering questions about the sensory details, learners will deepen their understanding of the characters and how they contribute to the storyline.

Lesson 3:
Biographies: Women in History
In this class, we will take a fascinating journey into the lives of two remarkable women from different times and places: civil rights activist Amelia Boynton Robinson and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who was admired for her dedication to freedom and opportunity for all. Through reading two informative passages about these women, we will analyze their achievements and legacies using comprehension strategies to connect key ideas and events through a series of reflective questions.

Lesson 4:
Poetry by Robert Frost
In this lesson, we will review a selected poetry piece by Robert Frost “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening". Our focus will be on identifying the rhyme scheme, and we will also learn about the unique features of poetry that contribute to the overall meaning of the poem. Along the way, we will use various learning tools to understand poetic devices like rhyming lines, meter, and grammar in writing. By the end of the lesson, learners will have the opportunity to create their own acrostic poem.

Parental Guidance
The resources for lessons incorporate critical analysis of the problematic content shared about the global history of marginalized groups as a key learning goal that informs learners of these issues. We will collectively discuss education, opportunities, and civil rights among these groups from an academic, no-bias perspective. Learners will view weekly lessons and activities through a screen-shared presentation via Canva Slides.
Pre-Requisites
Learners should be reading at a minimum Lexile level of 550 to get the most out of this course.
