このクラスで学べること

Math contests are a great way for aspiring mathematicians to develop their skills and compete with their peers in a challenging but supportive environment. In this weekly club, students will have the opportunity to work on contest problems selected from math contests from around the world. Each week, six problems will be chosen, three for grade 5 and three for grade 6, with one problem for each grade being easy, medium, and hard. (For reference, the questions in the thumbnail are medium and hard difficulty grade 5 questions.) In the first half of the class, students will have the chance to view the problems and ask questions about them, before working on them independently. Students who prefer to work in groups will also have that option. In the second half, students will be able to share their solutions and have the problems taken up by the teacher. Please note that the topic of the class will be the same every week, but new problems will be selected so that students always have a new challenge awaiting them when they come to the club meeting.

As this is a math contest class, some (though not all) of the problems may be quite challenging, and it is not expected that students will finish all of them. Students will be a good fit for this class if they enjoy math and are looking for a challenge in a group that will support their continued mathematical development.

学習到達目標

I have loved math and science since I was a child. As a teacher, I am passionate about sharing my love of math with my students. One of the most important aspects of an education is developing the ability to reason mathematically in a rigorous way, which only becomes more important as society develops technologically. When I teach I don't believe in giving students the answers, or giving them formulas to plug number into. I emphasize a wholistic understanding of math, reasoning about what you are doing, and appreciating the connections between different ideas.

I have a BSc. in computer science, and have been teaching and tutoring math and programming since high school. I have worked as an enriched math teacher for elementary school, and taught homeschool math at the high school level. I have also taught homeschool science, and developed curricula in ecology, evolutionary biology, chemistry and astronomy.

Outside of my teaching I enjoy reading science and classic literature, writing essays, and hiking, rock climbing, and cycling. I always look for ways to get out of my comfort zone and I believe that learning is a lifelong journey that never stops.

Here is what some of my former students and parents have said:

You are my favourite Spirit of Math teacher because you are able to explain difficult questions in a way thats easy to understand and you explain why we have to do certain steps. I feel motivated because I understand the material better after your classes. You are also very patient, cheerful and you keep the class interesting even though math can sometimes be a very dry subject. Sometimes you put examples and let us practice in class so we can remember and improve on questions. Hopefully we can keep in touch, good luck in your future, Mr. Zimmer!
Russell, Grade 6

Kieran Zimmer was the Spirit of Math teacher for my twin boys in Grades 5 and 6. Mr. Zimmer was able to provide my boys with an enriched experience, even beyond the traditional Spirit of Math curriculum. Being gifted math students, my boys at times were prone to being bored, but Mr. Zimmer kept them interested by taking the time to provide them with higher level material when he knew that they understood the lesson topics.

Whether teaching virtually or in-person, Mr. Zimmer was able to keep both my boys engaged and on track, teaching them higher level skills such as how to note-take proficiently and how to solve difficult mathematical word problems in a way that made sense. Mr. Zimmer’s fun attitude and sense of humour, resulted in a very positive extra-curricular math experience for my boys.
