After more than 140 weeks of the popular class Vocabulary Workshop, I've decided to return to some of the original words for students who missed them the first time around! Current students in Vocabulary Workshop are welcome to take this class as well, but please review the word list (below) to ensure that the student won't be repeating words. The words in Season 2 correspond to weeks 43-51 of the original Vocabulary Workshop (word list below). A large vocabulary is critical to future success on standardized tests, in college, and in the workplace. So why not start building a better vocabulary right now? In this ongoing weekly class, students will learn 10 vocabulary words during each session. We will examine each word's etymology, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and use in language. Students will also be given access to a Quizlet (online flashcards and games) and a Nearpod activity to practice the words outside of class. All words are taken from SAT/ACT vocabulary lists and will be different each week. As this is an ongoing class, students are welcome to attend some or all weeks and to skip classes when necessary. My passion -- as well as my professional background -- is writing. Professionally, I hold a B.A. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and I've been published in numerous newspapers and magazines. I've also taught writing and literature classes to students of all ages and abilities. For this class in particular, I bring my innate love of vocabulary and big, beautiful words!
On a personal note, I have homeschooled all five of my children and taught them all to read and write... and with each it has been a different experience! What's easy for one child is not easy for another. When I teach online, I always remember that it's important to keep learning fun and to incorporate different methods of teaching to reach all my students.
