NOTE:  This class requires a tape measure (or ruler) to be successful.


Using a tape measure is a great way to bring math skills to life. Measuring skills are essential - from building a (bird) house to riding amusement park rides, you need to know how to measure!  Unfortunately, it can be super confusing trying to keep track of feet and inches, and decipher all those little marks to complete a project. This class offers tips and plenty of practice to make sense of it all. 

Each meeting covers the same material. Drop in for practice as needed or stay until you’ve mastered measuring with a tape measure!

CLASS STRUCTURE 
Before Class:  Learners should participate in the pre-class Kahoot! game before each meeting to establish a baseline for their measuring skills and print the provided handout for in-class use. The hand out measuring objects change slightly each week, so be sure to print one for every week.

During Class:  The first few minutes of class is dedicated for entering the classroom and learner sharing while everyone is checked in. Then we will examine our tape measure, differentiate between feet and inches, then further break down inches into halves, quarters, eights, sixteenths, and thirty-seconds (depending on ability level of the learners) using enlarged pictures (which vary slightly from week to week). Learners will complete the pre-printed handout as we go through the pictures.  Remaining class time will be spent practicing measuring household objects. Learners will be given the opportunity to estimate the length of objects their friends select to measure.

After Class:  Learners should participate in the post-class Kahoot! game each week to assess learning. Write down your score to show improvement from week to week. Optional activities will be posted in the classroom after each meeting to encourage continued measuring.
