Let’s join Aunt Sam for a Look at US History through stories of Individuals. Why do we remember these people? What are some facts about their lives? What is fiction? In this multi-day class, we’ll take a look at the life, education, and many contributions to history that these individuals made. In this class, we will discuss the role that certain sources have played in their stories. We will use documents/resources from multi-based perspectives to evaluate their stories. My goal for this class is for students to gain an honest view of historical figures. This is an upper elementary course. In class, we will map their homes, their journeys, create a timeline and discuss how their lives have affected our lives for good and bad. (Students who are not comfortable sharing/participating are always welcome to simply participate at the level they are most comfortable). Also, the information included in the classroom will NOT always be used or covered in class. This course may be a multiple day per week class, not just once a week. The student will be encouraged to work on the extra projects outside of class, enabling the learner to have a greater understanding of the Historical Figure. Every lesson will include: • Worksheets (which students can fill out during class) • Slide presentations • Discussion questions • Crafts/projects/games included in classroom, however, not always done in class My goal is to inspire curiosity, interest, and application of what we learn from the lives of these historical figures. In the last class: • Kahoot quiz • Presentations, where those interested students present a Historical Hero of their choice (optional) • Diplomas Class Schedule and basic topics covered: Week One: Ben and Big Ideas: Why did Benjamin Franklin fly kites? • Why is Benjamin Franklin considered a Founding Father? History is fascinating to me! I like to research how people lived and how their lives have affected our lives. I have traveled across the US and around the world, enabling me to interact with many people and cultures firsthand. I have learned about how they live and, in many cases, lived with them. I have studied and lived in different parts of the US, Israel, Egypt, England and Paraguay. I have a broad firsthand experience of different cultures and their effect on the world.
I have taught these historical topics to my own children in our homeschool and in a variety of formats including public school, homeschool co-ops and community classes.
