People know the more popular American heroes such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and FDR. But what about the many lesser-known, unsung men and women who helped shape the United States of America? Do you know about the scrawny kid from Texas who not only became the most decorate U.S. soldier in WWII, but also became a successful Hollywood star after the war? How about the Virginia slave who helped the colonists win the Revolutionary War? Or the American Indian whose WWII exploits allowed him to become the last Plains Indian Chief? Or the women who spied on the Confederate White House? Or the New York City policeman who led the first antiterrorism effort in US history? All of these people deserve to be remembered. In this five-week course, students will learn about the often-unsung American heroes. These are exciting stories! Students will learn where they came from, and how they rose to the occasion. More importantly, they will learn why these men and women deserve to be remembered. Lesson 1: Audie Murphy (WWII), Elizabeth Van Lew and Mary Bowser (US Civil War), Joe Medicine Crow (WWII). Lesson 2: Two Conscientious Objectors: Alvin York (WWI) and Desmond Doss (WWII). Margaret Cochran Corbin (American Revolution). Lesson 3: Ernest J. King (CINC US Navy WWII), James Armistead (American Revolution). Lesson 4: Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (US Civil War), Tom Tunny (NYPD, WWI) Lesson 5: Lewis “Chesty” Puller (Korean War), George C. Marshall (CINC US Army WWII).

Obviously, warfare will be a common subject discussed. The thoughts, ideas, and motivations of historical figures will often be considered. Some of those ideas can be challenging to our modern sensibilities – disturbing or even repugnant. War is a violent and ugly affair. These subjects and ideas will be examined as far as needed to explore the given person but gratuitously, bloody imagery and explanations will be avoided. No detailed descriptions of carnage will be given in class – for instance, there will be no playing of the opening act of "Saving Private Ryan."
Similarly, the subject of slavery and the experiences of marginalized peoples will be handled with the appropriate recognition and respect. Rest assured, I have years of experience and education dealing with these topics
