12 live meetings

Homework
1 hour per week. Learners will be provided opportunities to write their own poems, based on the poem forms we cover during the course.
Letter Grade
Learners will be assessed informally by the teacher through verbal and written feedback. If a formal grade report is needed, please let me know, and I can do that for you at the conclusion of the course!

 In this lesson, learners will explore personal identity and roots through “I Am” and “Where I Am From” poems, encouraging reflection and self-expression.

 This lesson covers the art of Haikus and transforms everyday grocery store ads into poetic expressions, demonstrating the power of brevity and creativity.

 In this lesson, participants will create Found Poems and Blackout Poetry, learning to craft new poetic meanings from existing texts by selectively redacting words.

Supply List
Learners will be provided poem templates before each class.  It will be helpful for learners to have a magazine that can be cut up, scissors, glue, paper, and writing utensil, too!

I have been teaching literature and writing to teens for over 25 years. I hold Bachelor’s Degrees in English, Writing, and Secondary Education, as well as a current teaching license. In 2005, I earned a Master’s Degree in Education and continue to take professional development courses annually to refine my teaching practices and stay current with educational trends and new teaching methods. Alongside my work with pre-teens and teens, I am also an English professor at the university level, where I teach writing and literature courses.

During my 21 years as a high school English teacher, I was proud to help our sophomore students consistently achieve the highest reading and writing scores in the state. My teaching approach focuses on building a strong foundation by breaking the writing process into small, manageable steps. I am super patient and encouraging with my feedback and guidance, ensuring students feel supported and confident as they grow in their writing abilities.
