Students will learn about contemporary black men and women that they may not have previously heard of and what they have accomplished in their field of work. They will learn that there are many more accomplished black men and women than the more commonly known names like Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks or Harriet Tubman.

I am an Afro-Latina who has dedicated the the past 10 years to raising and homeschooling my 5 children.  During college I had the opportunity to take various courses based on African American history. After college I spent 6 years working in the non-profit sector seeking justice for men and women from the local community. In a time of many negative images and stories in the media, I'm deeply invested in teaching my children and yours about positive black role models in today's world.

Many of the men and women taught will come from the books "ABCs for Girls Like Me" and "ABCs for Boys Like Me" by Melanie Goolsby (as seen on current Netflix series "Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices.) Information about each person will come from a variety of sources including but not limited to books written by the person, interviews of them and other information that is available to the general public such as where they were born, went to school and their major accomplishments. When possible, additional men and women will be added to the list based on the interests of the ongoing students.
