I'm National Geographic Certified Educator and Outschool Teacher who travels full-time as "The Traveling Teach." I had the opportunity to go to England and Ireland and want to share Liverpool, Belfast and Southampton with you from the perspective of the Titanic. This class is ideally for learners who are interested in in-depth historical, scientific or cultural facts about locations. This is not a social class designed to just look at photos. It is an educational experience, hosted by The...

Learners can expect to leave this class with the following information: 1. Basic information and interesting facts about the Titanic disaster including but not limited to - how it was funded, where it was drawn by architects, how many passengers, crew and cargo were on board and how many people lived and died as a result of the shipwreck in April 1912. 2. Seeing authentic artifacts and sites related to the Titanic and The White Star Lines in Liverpool, Belfast and Southampton. 3. Social issues of the time that led to the disaster resulting in an unnecessary loss of life, particularly for the crew and 3rd Class passengers in an age appropriate way for children ages 7-10 years old. 4. Outcomes and changes from the sinking of the Titanic that still impact our lives today.
I'm "The Traveling Teach" who's been providing Virtual Field Trips since before the pandemic made it cool! I've been an educator of Geography and History on Outschool since January 2019. Before heading out on the road, I was a Professional Youth Worker and then a Middle School Science Teacher so I know the value of project based learning and learning "on location" through field trips and excursions. Just because your learner can't physically go to a place, doesn't mean they should miss out on the change to learn about it. I look forward to having your learner join me on this adventure. Personally, I've been interested in and passionate about the Titanic disaster since I was 8 years old (which is a long time ago!) so I've read books and materials on the subject and based my recent UK trip around these locations to create this educational experience for you as well as visit these important locations for myself. For one time and multi-week classes I provide a 10% discount (please contact me for discount) for: Returning students from my previous classes Outschool teacher's children Siblings who both register for the same class

This class will be discussing the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Learners can expect to hear stories of survival and loss, death by drowning, hypothermia and crushing (as the ship sank) as well as orphans and those left behind. They can expect to hear about people who sacrificed their lives and stories of those who chose to save themselves. They can expect to hear about the horror of the event and how it affected those who survived including what they heard and saw including the cries of people. Learners can expect to hear about social norms of the time regarding class, race, etc. and placed in a historical context for them to learn more about the time period.
The source material for this class is the maritime and Titanic museum exhibits and guide books from each museum at each location in Liverpool, Belfast and Southampton as well as reputable online educational resources (the Smithsonian and National Geographic) should questions arise during class that are not covered by the museums. While this class is an educational one, it's expected that learners may have seen the Titanic movie directed by James Cameron and may want to ask questions or discuss elements from the movie that relate to the topic each week. The educator will incorporate those into class in an age appropriate way for all learners and draw out the true history from the Hollywood fictionalization of the event. Seeing the movie is not an expectation of this class.
