Does your child enjoy learning about new places? Do they have a list of places they want to travel to? If so, this is the class for them!! To say that I am excited about this class is a major understatement. I love to travel and explore new places and I love to teach. Now I get to teach about traveling! This is amazing! Through this class, I hope to share my enthusiasm for exploring new places while encouraging children to read and socialize with a group of their peers.

We will meet every other week to discuss a different Where is? book. Classes will include comprehension checks, discussion time, and a hands-on activity. Many of the activities will require materials, but I will try to keep them simple items that most of us have around the house- watercolors, craft sticks, construction paper, etc. Materials will be posted in the classroom each week. Why twice every other week? Simple, as much as we all love our Outschool world, truth is, we have other things going on as well. I feel every other weekly format will give parents enough time to get the book and supplies and enough time for learners to enjoy reading the book while not feeling rushed to finish for class. We've all been in that spot of "Hurry up and finish! You have class tomorrow.". I'd like to avoid that for our learners by offering them more time to prepare for each class.

****While we may be reading small sections of the text in class, to share, say our favorite parts, students should come to class having already read the text. Due to copyright regulations, we are unable to read the entire text during class.****

The Where is it? series of books does an amazing job of explaining different famous places, regions, or areas worldwide. We'll have the opportunity to explore the Eiffel Tower, the Galapagos Islands, The White House, The Mississippi River, Niagara Falls, Machu Picchu, and many other destinations. Come explore with us!

Then this book club will run every other week through the 2023-2024 school year.

Week of January 14- Where is the Great Wall? Come discuss the book, explore the reasons behind the Great Wall of China, and play a dice game to discover who can build the longest wall. Be careful though! Invaders, floods, disease, collapses, and revolts will slow your progress. Learners will need 2 die and papers that will be included in the classroom to play.

Week of January 28- Where is Area 51? Let's add some technology to this STEAM class! Together we'll play a Where is Area 51 based Kahoot game and work on a word search. Learners do not need to create a Kahoot account to play the game.

Week of February 11- Where is Alcatraz? Let's take a virtual field trip to Alcatraz by looking at Jenny's pictures and videos from her recent trip there. Then we'll create wanted posters of famous Alcatraz inmates. Learners will need basic art supplies.

Week of February 25 - Where is the Serengeti? We'll go on a classroom safari, discussing the many animals of the Serengeti. Then we'll create silhouettes of the Serengeti. Learners will need watercolor paints, a cup of water, paper towels, watercolor paper, 1 piece of black construction paper, and a black crayon or black sharpie marker (not a Crayola marker). Learners that are more artistically challenged (myself included!) may wish to print off an animal body form to trace. I recommend Google searching "African animal coloring pages". The animal body form should be small enough to fit on the watercolor paper with room for a sunset landscape painting.

Week of March 10 - Where is Mount Everest? Climbing Mount Everest is DANGEROUS! We'll discuss some of the expeditions people have taken and the dangers climbers face. Then we'll use a map of Mount Everest to work out some math problems.

Week of March 24 - Where is the Amazon? This week we'll discuss the age of exploration and various expeditions to the Amazon region. Then we'll play a Rain Forest-themed Bingo game!! Learners will need to print out a Bingo board from the classroom and have small items to use as markers.

Week of April 7- Where is Hollywood? Let's learn all about the evolution of Hollywood, the big 5 movie companies, and several notable movie stars through time. At the end of class, learners will be challenged to make an Oscar from aluminum foil. Learners will need aluminum foil and a plastic cup to act as the base of the Oscar Award.

Week of April 21- Where is The White House? Let's learn about the President's home by working together to play a Kahoot! a game filled with facts about the White House.

Don't worry! Class won't stop there. We'll be adding books until the end of the 2023-2024 school year.

I grew up in Wisconsin where I completed my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education at UW Stout. I've taught for the public school system for 14 years in a variety of positions including classroom teacher, interventionist, ELL teacher and elementary science lab teacher. I hold a Masters Degree in Reading and School Administration from Johns Hopkins. After leaving the public school system I've spent the last several years teaching middle school Science and History at a homeschool tutorial while being a homeschool mom. I enjoy teaching hands on engaging courses that spark the interest of students with the ultimate goal of encouraging them to become life long learners. I welcome student interaction and questions.

In my personal life I LOVE to read, travel and explore new areas, especially the beach! I am a Girl Scout leader and adore every single girl in my troop. As a troop leader I am certified in several outdoors areas- archery, canoe, kayak, camping, etc. I can't wait to share some of my love of the outdoors with families here on Outschool.
