In this ongoing PHONICs class, learners will learn and practice phonetic skills using word families 2X weekly. Learners will learn to associate sounds with letters, word families, drawing, listening, speaking and writing, too.
In this course, learners begin with phonemic awareness, the ability to hear then identify units of sound. They are introduced to letters and their associated sound which helps learners build and decode new words.
Learners will be taught to blend individual sounds together to say an entire word. They will begin with CVC [consonant-vowel-consonant] words such as cat, fan, bad, red before moving on to CCVC words [stop, play and CVCC words [milk, best].
Learners will focus on knowledge of the alphabet, basic consonant sounds, long and short vowel sounds, apply them to forming words; sounding out words and nonsense words, use of word families, chanting and reading rhyming books, poems, and songs along with the use of pictures and props as learners are taught to look for patterns.

The goal of the course is to develop a strong foundation in phonics which leads learners to a solid foundation in reading. Learning the
skill of sounding out blends helps to prepare them for reading.

I am a retired public school Principal who has taught and written curriculum for grades K-12 in all subject areas. I have taught learners from grades K-12, Special needs learners, adults, ESL learners from several countries it seems for most of my life. Teaching children is what I love to do! And teaching learners of all ages to read and write is my passion.
Because phonics is the foundation to reading, it's important for learners to have a strong, solid understanding of phonetic skills for all learners but even more imperative for learners learning to read and speak English fluently.
