In this class we will discuss and learn about the women’s suffrage movement, who the leaders of the movement were, what were the arguments for and against women's equality, how was suffrage handled in other countries, and discuss how women’s roles have evolved over the last 150 years. This class is largely discussion based, with the first half of each meeting period being a powerpoint presentation, followed by open questions. My goal with this class is not only to present history and discuss how and why the movement progressed as it did, but also to take a look at the opposition to women's equality and how it was both effected by and impacted society at that time.

Topic covered will be:

Week 1 – The role of the American woman pre-civil war; What was the theory of the Republican Woman?
Week 2 – The right to vote in Europe and England; How did the women's movement look across the world?
Week 3 – The Seneca Falls convention 1848 - Who organized it and why?
Week 4 – Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth,
and Ida Wells
Week 5 – Civil War and Civil Rights - Who were some of the key figures in both the Abolitionist Movements and the Women's Movements?
Week 6 – The National American Women Suffrage Association; How and why the movement splintered
Week 7 – National Women’s Party / Alice Paul
Week 8 – WWI and the signing of the 19th Amendment; Brief overview of what happened 1920-1960

This class may contain some topics that might be uncomfortable for some students. We will discuss the treatment of women who were arrested for protesting, which included jail time, solitary confinement, and forced feedings. There may be some Youtube videos that are seen during this class. I will share my screen and learners will not need to access them on their own.

I have been an educator on Outschool since February of 2018. I have my MBA and MHA, both of which have taught me the value of conducting research and asking questions. I have a passion for history and learning. You can usually find me in the middle of 2-3 books or watching a documentary.
