Has your child read The Wild Robot yet? This is an AMAZING and loving book about a robot that gets stranded on an island and learns how to survive and communicate with the animals there. By the end of the story, it is questionable if the robot is more alive than robot.
The plot is exciting as the manufacturer has more robots come to gather Roz (the main character/robot) and refabricate her. The Wild Robot Escapes, the book this club is about, is the sequal to this book. Both are easy and fun reads with very short chapters wich is VERY encourageing and builds confidence for struggling readers.

Each week we begin with presenting projects/challenges from previous weeks (except the first class. Next, we will discuss the chapters and be presented with a STEAM Challenge that pertains to the applicable chapters (hands-on project that combines or utilizes some or all of the content areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and/or Math). Challenges are listed below along with suggested materials, but participants can use whatever they wish. They are not required to have these materials in class as they will be able to gather them after planning, but you also have a list if you wish to have supplies on hand ahead of time. Kids will be broken up into breakout rooms according to age levels and brainstorm ideas. I will be jumping into breakout rooms to check on them and assist as needed. When they feel they are ready, they may leave the camera and gather materials to start building. This class is scheduled for 55 minutes, BUT kids may choose to stay on and build together, extending the class time to 90 minutes. If they don’t finish in class, they finish after class before the following class. Kids present their projects the following class.

Class 1: Introduction; HW- Read Chapters 1-23
-Need: String or something for to bead for the necklace, three different colors of choice beads, Binary Code Printable, Assemble Roz Binary Printable (both printables are downloadable in the Classroom)
-Discuss coding and how it pertains to robots and computers. Watch a video from Tinkertime introducing binary coding and how to make a binary coding necklace. We will make a binary coding necklace with our names.
-Challenge: use binary coding to build Roz (will need printable referenced in the “need” section above)

Class 2: About chapters 1-21; HW- Read chapters 24-46

-Discuss the STEAM steps (these steps are on the STEAM Organizer that will be used for each STEAM challenge):
Ask: What’s the question or challenge?
           Imagine: Brainstorm ideas
Plan: What materials do I need and how will I use them?
           Create: Follow your plan.
Improve: Modify/What could I do to improve my design?
Reflect: Share what worked and did not work.

-In chapter 30, Roz uses a tool belt. We will discuss the significance of the tool belt in class and kids will be presented with the challenge of creating a tool belt that fastens.
