The universe is made of incredibly tiny particles that interact to make everything happen. Protons, neutrons, and electrons bond together to form atoms. But how does this happen? What are those particles made of? These are questions that scientists have been working on answering for the last hundred years. In this class we will look at the experiments that have brought us to what is known as the Standard Model of Particle Physics, and what the pieces of the Standard Model are. This class is...
10 lessons//10 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1What is the Standard Model of Particle Physics?~ Examine the Standard Model (the basic chart showing all the fundamental particles) ~ Learn about Matter and Forces and how they're equally important in particle physics ~ Understand the idea of particle or quantum physics and what we will learn in this classWeek 2Lesson 2Development of Atomic Theory~ Analyze and sketch experiments that proved that atoms can be split into protons, neutrons, and electrons ~ Discuss and sketch ways the idea of the atom has changed throughout history ~ Update our understanding of the Standard Model from week 1Week 3Lesson 3The Fundamental Forces of Nature~ Learn how scientists discovered the 4 fundamental forces that cause all action in our universe ~ Learn the force-carrying bosons ~ Get basic understanding of how force is passed between particlesWeek 4Lesson 4Quantizing Forces~ Analyze and sketch two experiments that proved the true nature of light as a force ~ Understand that forces can be broken down into individual pieces ~ Discuss how quantizing forces changes our understanding of themWeek 5Lesson 5Charged Leptons~ Learn the three types of charged leptons ~ Analyze and sketch a diagram of a cloud chamber ~ Understand how scientists were able to detect charged leptons despite their sizeWeek 6Lesson 6Particle Accelerators~ Learn the basic process of how particle accelerators work ~ Sketch parts of the process a particle goes through in an accelerator ~ Examine the images we get from detectors inside the particle acceleratorsWeek 7Lesson 7Quarks~ Learn how particle accelerators were used to discover quarks ~ Know the names of the 6 types of quarks ~ Understand the three generations of quarks on the Standard ModelWeek 8Lesson 8Neutrinos~Understand the difference between charged and uncharged leptons ~ Learn the process of prediction and discovery of neutrinos ~ Sketch or describe the DUNE experiment that Fermilab is conducting to learn more about neutrinosWeek 9Lesson 9Antimatter~ Understand what antimatter is and why it exists ~ Learn about the mystery of where all the antimatter is ~ Write the names and symbols of the antimatter particlesWeek 10Lesson 10Higgs Boson~ Brief introduction to field theory ~ Understand what the Higgs field is ~ Complete the Standard Model by adding the Higgs boson
- Students will learn about the most basic particles that create and rule the universe. By the end of class students will be able to explain what the Standard Model of Particle Physics is, how its organized, and what the different types of particles do.
I have been teaching homeschoolers ages 6-21 for 18+ years. During that time I've taught all traditional subjects and found ways to tailor them to the needs and learning styles of all learners. I have taught math, chemistry, and physics on Outschool for 3 years. I have studied particle physics in the past and continue to attend particle physics lectures to broaden my base knowledge and help me teach the most up-to-date material possible in this changing field. During my time teaching I've had many learners ask about the subatomic world and what we know about it, which has helped me create strategies in teaching this content.
A notebook dedicated to this subject is preferred, but not required. We will reference material from previous lessons so it will be helpful to have previous notes.
