In this class we will have an open, honest and safe conversation about who Roald Dahl is, the good, the bad and the ugly. We will discuss what we can learn about his literature by learning about the author. And we will investigate whether we can or should separate the art for the artist and how to do that. Roald Dahl is a well renowned children's author. "One of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20th century", Dahl was named by The Times as one of the 50 greatest British...
Students will learn how to choose inclusive language, how we can evolve our own perspectives, and how to listen to other people's opinions sympathetically.
In addition to a degree in English literature and a teaching certificate from Cambridge I've attended many diversity and inclusivity training courses. Some of the courses include topics such as cultural sensitivity, and unconscious bias awareness training, and I'm currently enrolled in an Iversity course called Rethinking 'Us' & 'Them': Integration and Diversity in Europe. I also co-lead an online discuss group called 'Talking about Race: Safe Space/ Brave Space'.

Please read the class description carefully to determine if this class is appropriate for your child. This course involves the discussion of sensitive topics such as racism, and misogyny. We discuss why Roald Dahl's literature might be hurtful. We also learn how to change it to be more inclusive and how we can all evolve to be better more accepting people. Please note, we will not discuss Roald Dahl's antisemitic statements as those do not appear in his books. We will discuss how Roald Dahl changed his option once the offensive language was explained to him. James and the Giant Peach was banned in Texas public schools and a town in Wisconsin for a myriad of reasons. “It has been banned for being too scary for the targeted age groups, mysticism, sexual inferences, profanity, racism, references to tobacco and alcohol, and claims that it promotes disobedience, drugs, and communism.” The Oompa-Loompas were originally described as "amiable black pygmies who have been imported by Mr. Willy Wonka from ‘the very deepest and darkest part of the African jungle". Roald Dahl eventually understood why this was wrong and released the edited version years later. All of these Roald Dahl books are appropriate for children 9 and up according to Common Sense Media (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/)
