In this Literature class, we will dive into the English language through literature, drama, reading and writing. We will read short stories, excerpts from classic literature and of course poetry. 5 lessons//5 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Unit 1: Introduction to Shakespeare: Meet The Bard!The biography, works and influence of Shakespeare on literature and beyond. Students will work on a biographical sketch activity, complete a web quest and learn about and construct a paper model of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater.Week 2Lesson 2Unit 2: Reading and Writing Shakespearean Sonnet Poetry: Writing Like The Bard!Students will read selected sonnets and analyze for structure and meaning. Students will then prepare to write their own poetry in sonnet style.Week 3Lesson 3Unit 3: Shakespearean Drama, Comedy and Tragedy: Performing Like The Bard!Students will read 2 selected Shakespearean plays (student choice) and then they will use flipgrid to record their own dramatic reading of their choice of play. We will use 15 minute Shakespeare plays for this activity (which are a shorter version of popular plays). Students will then write their own short play script, or adapt an ending to one of the ones they have read, and write a short script. They will create/add characters, use descriptive language and engage in analysis.Week 4Lesson 4Unit 4: Shakespearean Critique: Analyze and Critique Like The Bard!Students will investigate Shakespeare elements in modern theater/film comparisons/contrasts to connect their knowledge. Students will investigate materials for common themes, allusions and symbols.Week 5Lesson 5Unit 5: Wrap Up: Slamming And Jamming To Become A Modern Day Bard.Students will participate in a poetry slam/reading/presentation. They may read their own poetry or do a dramatic reading of their favorite poem and share with the class. They will evaluate and analyze their poems and those of their classmates.
SWBAT understand and analyze the classic English literature of Shakespeare.
I am offering this class to get students excited about English Literature. Through drama and dramatic readings, Shakespeare comes alive!

Teacher will provide PowerPoint and printable notes. Teacher will provide examples and excerpts of literature through the use of internet links and screen shots/readings. Students will be encouraged to follow along and may be given a copy of the reading material digitally to engage and enhance fluent reading. Students will read, write and be involved in drama to learn more about literature and the English language.
