In this discussion-based collaborative class learners will use what they know, and what they want to know, to launch explorations of current local, national, and global issues around the novel coronavirus pandemic. Using news and government sources, we will work to make sense of how culture, inequality, and social institutions are shaping our experience of the pandemic. Learners will leave each class with new sociological insight and understanding of the ways that human social behavior is shaping the course of the pandemic. We will also consider how our actions directly impact social outcomes and think about ways that we might be able to make a difference as stewards of an ever changing world. Our session will begin with sharing about our thoughts and questions. This is a deeply sensitive issue and I want to be sure that students have a safe space to talk about how this moment is impacting them and to ask questions as well. This is where we will find our question of the day. We will then spend time exploring one or two sources that offer insight into our question. We will discuss the social aspects of our inquiry: What is the role of norms, values and beliefs? How do groups and social networks play a role? What social institutions have the greatest impact? What kinds of social change might result? We will wrap up our discussion by considering what role we play in all of this. How are our individual actions impacting the outcome? Students will leave with an empowered action that they can take to make a difference in their social world.

教師の専門知識と資格
I was asked recently to name in six words why I teach. I knew, without hesitation because, I want to change the world. How? By nurturing, inspiring, and empowering my students to be empathetic, critical, and proactive local and global citizens.
I am a sociologist by training and a teacher and mentor at heart. I teach Sociology, Leadership, College Planning, and Analytic Writing. I have a BA in Sociology/Anthropology with a minor in Women's Studies, an MA in Sociology, and a Social Science teaching credential. I also have an MS in Educational Leadership and an Administrative Services Credential. I have taught high school and college students for over twenty years and I have served as a member of the American Sociological Association's High School Advisory. As a school leader in K-12 institutions I have led professional learning for K-12 faculty and have mentored students planning for college admission as well as adults working as educators and school leaders.
I have been teaching online courses since the fall of 2016 and, while it comes with some challenges, I enjoy the video conference format since it allows for some of the social interaction that we get in traditional face to face classrooms. I believe that authentic learning stems from our natural curiosity and is achieved through joyful and collaborative experiences. It is my job as the teacher to create opportunities for learning that are exploratory and that ignite interest in the world around us.
I look forward to working with you and your learners!
