Welcome to the Classical Chess History Course of Central NY Chess. This class is designed to be an introduction to the early essential historical figures of Chess History, from the early sixteenth century to the late nineteenth century. Each lesson discusses both a short history of the individual in question and their contribution to the game of chess during their respective eras. Our Classical Chess History Course is structured similarly to our other semester-length chess courses, with the discussion of each lesson taking up to the first thirty minutes or so of each class, followed by the remaining thirty minutes being used for organized play (typically the students playing against each other using LiChess.org - which does not require any account creation or login). The schedule of lesson topics for the twelve weeks of the course will focus on the following historical figures and their corresponding contributions to the game of chess: Week 1: Pedro Damiano - Giuoco Piano (the "Quiet Game") Week 2: Ruy Lopez - The Ruy Lopez Opening (a.k.a the Spanish Opening) Week 3: Gioachinno Greco - Removing the Guard Week 4: Luis Ramirez de Lucena - The Scandinavian Defense Week 5: Francois Philidor - Split Passed Pawns Week 6: Philip Stamma - The Queen’s Gambit Week 7: La Bourdonnais - The Destructive Sacrifice Week 8: William Evans - The Evans Gambit Week 9: John Cochrane - The Cochrane Gambit Week 10: Howard Staunton - The Intermediate Move Week 11: Adolf Anderssen - The Evergreen Game Week 12: Paul Morphy - The Opera Game As mentioned above, each week will also include time dedicated to organized play, for the students to practice what they have learned against each other.

We are on a mission to teach critical thinking, logic, reasoning, and other life and social skills through scholastic chess instruction, to today's youth. Our classes are primarily directed at elementary & middle-school-aged children, and are organized into 8-week semesters of once-weekly 60-minute long classes (8 meetings total), each comprised of approximately 30 minutes of lecture format followed by approximately 30 minutes of organized play between the students. We've been teaching these classes locally for years, but now are excited to share them with the rest of the world thanks to Outschool!
