"We hold these truths to be self-evident." What did the founders mean when they declared that all men are created equal? What were their grievances against England and King George? What was their idea of the purpose of government?

Abraham Lincoln referenced the Declaration of Independence in his Gettysburg Address, as did Martin Luther King Jr. in numerous speeches, including his "I Have a Dream" oration. It inspired Chinese students during the protest at Tiananmen Square and the leaders of the French Revolution

However, at times the United States has failed to live up to the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence. Slavery, racial discrimination, and inequality have been and remain issues to overcome.

The study of history necessitates viewing such events from multiple perspectives. For example, Thomas Jefferson's view of the Declaration would vary dramatically from that of Thurgood Marshall or Susan B. Anthony. I teach with the principle that all students should be able to freely express their own opinions and respect the opinions of others.

Join us as we examine these and a myriad of other topics that connect to the Declaration.

Week 1: The Story Behind the Declaration of Independence
Week 2: Slavery and the Declaration
Week 3: Women's Rights
Week 4: Civil Rights in the 20th Century

学習到達目標
