"New Kid" by Jerry Craft. I will post graphic organizers in PDF and Google Doc versions before each class, that should be ready for in class work in either form. Colored pencils, pens, and paper are good resources to have on hand for every session.

This award winning graphic novel is based on the experiences of the author and his sons as African American students in New York private schools. As such "New Kid" discusses topics such as unconscious bias, bullying, and systemic racism. The book has been banned in several school districts because it addresses these topics. I believe that the reality inspired experiences that the author shares throughout the book are valid and that students will gain valuable lessons in empathy and awareness of unconscious bias from reading this book. Preconceptions and stereotypes are addressed in a factual way that involves all characters. Many characters become aware of their biases and begin to change the way that they view others. Please see above for the conversations that we will be having in class about these topics.
