In this ongoing class students will explore real-world applications of math, making learning both enjoyable and relevant. This camp will help build learner confidence and enjoyment while teaching important math skills.

Teacher Mel's Summer Math Magic Camp is an exciting and interactive ongoing class where students explore practical math concepts from the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade curriculums. Meeting twice a week, students engage in hands-on activities and solve real-world math problems, from everyday scenarios to fun, magical challenges. This camp builds confidence, enhances problem-solving skills, and ignites a passion for math in young learners. With a mix of individual and group activities, games, and projects, campers enjoy a supportive and exciting environment that makes math fun and relevant.

Students will explore the following topics:

• Week 1: During the week of June 3rd, students will be introduced to the power of ten numbers and practice using them to aid with multiplication and division problems. We will discuss the importance of being able to estimate products and quotients and use power of ten numbers to help us do so. Students will participate in a fun summer carnival-themed project.

• Week 2: During the week of June 10th, students will be introduced to fractions and practice identifying equivalent fractions. They will learn the importance of simplifying fractions and begin to learn how to do so. To reinforce their understanding, students will solve various pizza-themed word problems.

• Weeks 3: During the week of June 17th, students will begin incorporating fractions into addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. Students will practice this by completing a "Recipe Remix" assignment. 

• Week 4: During the week of June 24th, students will put their fraction knowledge to the test by completing a fun "Recipe Remix" assignment. 

• Week 5: During the week of July 1st, students will learn about ratios and will solve various ratio problems involving a fictional ice cream parlour. 

• Week 6: During the week of July 8th, students will be able to practice and review material from the first 6 weeks by playing a fun game of Math Jeopardy! We will also have time for student suggested questions and topics. 

• Week 7: During the week of July 15th students will continue to review fraction and ratios while also learning to multiply and divide fractions.

• Week 8: During the week of July 22nd students will practice multiplying, dividing and simplifying fractions. Students will also be introduced to variables.

• Week 8: During the week of July 29th students will practice estimating products and quotients using rounding and power of ten principles. 

In this class we will focus on one new topic each week. Students are welcome to join at any time, especially if they identify certain topics they would like extra help with. The schedule will be updated frequently and will be flexible to help learners get the most out of their lessons.

Pre-Requisites
Students should have an understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with integers. If students would like to practice these foundational skills first - please check out my other courses.
