In this five day class we will be looking at mythology not as "silly stories from long ago" but as stories that held certain truths within them. We'll try to recapture some of the awe and wonder the ancient people felt at how a seed could, dying, be reborn into new life. We'll talk about how mythology could provide comfort in the face of the unpredictable nature of the universe and how mythology changed as emperors began asserting their military might. We will discuss theories about how...
When I take an interest in a topic, I really throw myself into it. I first became interested in ancient mythology as a young child and have kept returning to the topic ever since. In university I studied theology and political studies, both of which provide interesting lens for exploring mythology.
I will provide some written materials but students will be encouraged to do independent reading as well.
This class will deal with dark themes. We will be talking about death and destruction. There might be some very limited discussion of sex in the context of talking about gods' family trees. Paintings, carvings and pottery used for illustrations sometimes involve small amounts of nudity.
