In this three-day class, students will complete superhero writing assignments. In this camp, students will pretend to be superheroes. As superheroes, students will participate in engaging writing topics. Students will do the following writing text types in this class: - Descriptive Writing - Procedural Writing - Opinion Writing The BEST PART ... Student can wear a superhero costume to class! ************************************************************************************ ***** DAY 1 - DESCRIPTIVE SUPERHERO WRITING ***** During our first day of class, students will describe themselves as a superhero. They will use a variety of adjectives in their descriptive writing. Below is a description of each part of the lesson. - INTRODUCTION - Students will give themselves a superhero name at the beginning of the class. If needed, I will help students will their superhero name. Students will introduce themselves to the group by their superhero name. - PLAY A GAME - Students will play a game of SUPERHERO LEAP. I will give a word. Students will decide if the word describes a superhero. If it describes a superhero, they will leap up like a superhero. If the word does not describe a superhero, they will remain in their seats. - DRAW A PICTURE - Students will draw a picture of themselves as a superhero. They will also color their picture. - MINILESSON - I will introduce describing words. Students will learn that they can describe by color, shape, size, feeling, personality, or abilities. I will show students a few pictures of superheroes. As a group, they will come up with as many describing words as possible for each superhero picture. - BRAINSTORM - Students will fill out a graphic organizer. They will brainstorm descriptive words to describe themselves as a superhero. Students will describe how they look, how they feel, how they act, and what they do as a superhero. - WRITE - Students will use their graphic organizer to write their descriptive paper. As students write, I will check-in with each student. Students will tell me their ideas, and if needed, I will give writing assistance. Students will share their writing piece with the group at the end of class. ******************************************************************************************** ***** DAY 2 - PROCEDURAL WRITING ***** During our second day of class, students will write a procedure on how to become the greatest superhero. They will put their procedure in order and use transition words. Below is a description of each part of the lesson. - INTRODUCTION - Students will introduce themselves to the group by their superhero name. They will share one attribute of a superhero that makes a superhero great (ex: strong, can fly, helps others, etc.) - DISCUSSION - The group will have a discussion. They will discuss ways to become the greatest superhero. As students share, I will write their ideas onto the screen. - MINILESSON - I will explain a procedure and why it's important. I will give students some procedures out of order. They will explain the correct order and discuss why the order is important. - DRAW A SERIES OF PICTURES - Students will draw a procedure on how they plan to become the greatest superhero. Students will draw four steps in their procedure. If time allows, they will also color their pictures. - BRAINSTORM - Students will fill out a graphic organizer. Students will write a description of each step. Students will also add transition words for each step. - WRITE - Students will use their graphic organizer to write a paragraph on their procedure. As students are writing, I will check in with each student. They will share their ideas, and I will assist with any writing questions. Students will share their writing piece with the group at the end of class. ******************************************************************************************* ***** DAY 3 - OPINION WRITING ***** During the third day of class, students will write their opinion on why they have the best superpower. They will give reasons why they think they have the best superpower. Below is a description of each part of the lesson. - INTRODUCTION - Students will introduce themselves by their superhero name. They will also share a cool superpower they would like to have. - DISCUSSION - Students will discuss different superpowers superheroes can have. As students share, I will record their ideas onto the screen. - MINILESSON - I will explain the different between facts and opinions. Students will play a game of fact vs opinion. Afterwards, students will learn the important parts of opinion writing. - BRAINSTORM - Students will fill out a graphic organizer. They will choose a superpower. They will brainstorm reasons and details why they have the best superpower. - WRITE - Students will write a paragraph on why they have the best superpower. As students write, I will check in with each student. Students will share their ideas with me. I will also assist with any writing questions.
