This class is designed to provide students with a chance to socialize and gain skills over the summer. These classes are a hybrid of individualized learning and traditional classes. Each section has no more than six learners which provides a foundation for strong relationships, social-emotional learning, and truly individualized instruction. This class goes a step beyond your average book club and is designed to support neurodivergent learners. The texts are chosen with high concepts and interest but with easier language. Texts chosen are available on platforms with dyslexia-friendly options including audiobooks. Scaffolding is provided for new or non-literal language. The course is taught by an autistic/adhd educator. Each unit incorporates a wide variety of texts and mediums to practice skill generalization. In this class, students will practice being critical analyzers of media as they work to spot the differences in messaging and theme between a novel and a television adaptation. Week 1: We will read chapters 1-4, learners will watch the first episode of the series. During class time we will discuss differences, play trivia shows, and learn about hooks and setting development and how they differ for different audiences. Week 2: Learners will read chapters 5-10 and watch episode two. We will discuss the inclusion of poetry and other medias in the example. Week 3: Learners will read chapters 11- 17 and watch episode three. We will focus on character analysis and contrasting portrayals. Week 4: Learners will read chapters 18-23 and watch episode four. We will practice understanding perspectives and how the plot is developing. Week 5: Learners will read chapters 24-27 and watch episode five. We will discuss foreshadowing and inference. Week 6: Learners will read chapters 28-33 and watch episode six and seven. We will focus on critiques and comparison and contrast writing to prepare for our writing project. Week 7: Learners will read chapters 34-41 and watch episode eight. We will discuss the ending and thematic differences between the series and the novel. We will work on outlines for our paper. Week 8: Students will work on their final writing project before sharing it in class. We will have a finale party and read a teaser for the next book to encourage future reading.
