Join us for a fun and challenging book club where we meet every week to discuss a new book. Every time we meet, I will lead a round-table discussion for each book we read. Every week we will discuss topics ranging from the author's intent to character and plot development. Then we will all share our opinions as we analyze the works. By facilitating the discussion, I will model to the students how to clearly express their thoughts and debate and discuss topics with their peers. Every student in the class will have an opportunity to share their opinion. Over the course of eight weeks, students will read a variety of books across genres. Students need to read each book before the meeting in which we discuss it. Reading time will vary per student but will likely take 2 to 4 hours a week. I have chosen these books to get kids excited and engaged with the writing, making them want to share their thoughts with others. Before the first meeting, please have your student read When Winter Robeson Came by Brenda Woods. This is a shorter book in verse, making it perfect for those who sign up right before the class. Our complete list of books is as follows: Week 1 - The School for Whatnots by Margaret Peterson Haddix Week 2 - Root Magic by Eden Royce Week 3 - The Last Mapmaker by Christina Soontornvat Week 4 - Once Upon a Camel by Kathi Appelt Week 5 - Louisa June and the Nazis in the Waves by L. M. Elliott Week 6 - Loot: How to Steal a Fortune by Jude Watson Week 7 - The Secret of Glenndunny by Kathryn Lasky Week 8 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling Please look up the books prior to enrolling your student to make sure the choices will be a good match for your student and your family. We need a minimum of 5 students for this course to run. Please share the listing with others if you enroll. Thank you!

I am passionate about books and have been running book clubs for homeschoolers for over ten years. I believe that book clubs are a great way to prepare for high school level analysis and also teach students how to articulate their thoughts about what they have read. And I love mysteries and hopefully by the end of this course your student will too!
