As an elementary classroom teacher, teaching the mystery genre in reading is one of the best units of study for young readers. Studying mysteries has a tendency to spark young readers interests and motivates them to want to read and solve the mystery before the detective.Throughout my years of teaching literacy, I have seen the excitement on students faces when their top secret assignments are revealed throughout the unit. The students apply their newly acquired reading strategies with a new interest for reading.
