In my professional career, I've worked with children from various socioeconomic backgrounds with all kinds of family structures. I've led previous book clubs in-person and online featuring this book so I'm familiar with kids' responses to the rough opening scene. Most kids are more freaked out by the idea of a pencil being shoved partway up someone's nose rather than anything to do with mean foster parents or bullies.

Bud is a 10 year old boy on the run during the Great Depression. Bud has escaped an orphanage and a bad foster home.
