Each student will show and discuss their designs and prototypes with suggestions from other students and the teacher for improvements. The teacher will not give answers, instead, ask questions of the designer in order for them to reach the answer that is best for their unique design.

This class will teach your child the engineering design process and will encourage, not control the designs for individual students. The teacher gives a challenge, gives some open-ended suggestions and asks lots of encouraging questions without "giving the answer". This method encourages outside of the box thinking and allows students to be creative and try and fail without feeling a sense of failure. Failure is a part of learning and will be taught as a way to learn and improve designs. 
This camp will focus on building Land Yachts and learning the Engineering Design Process in order to organize their thinking, designing, building and testing.

There is some competitiveness that will naturally arise, but the teacher will encourage students to redesign to improve their designs. The arts are included as the teacher will refer to the importance of the attractiveness of design in the real world.

Day 1: Introduction to the Engineering Design Process, vocabulary development, introduction of the design challenge.
Day 2: Group discussion and presentation of designs, building of prototypes and beginning testing of prototypes.
Day 3: Redesign and retesting of prototypes and evaluation and justification of designs.

Students will learn how to use the Engineering Design Process in order to solve problems by designing prototypes and testing them. Students will be encouraged to "go back to the drawing board" to redesign and improve their designs.

Parents will be asked to supervise for safety and insist on eye and ear protection when necessary.

Materials may be used or not used depending on the designer and the lists are suggestions as students may think of something not on the list and for this camp, they can think outside of the box!

Who Done It?: paper, markers, crayons or colored pencils, (suggest 2-4 locks), combination locks, locks with keys, (I have used a Melissa & Doug toy house with doors and keys), many common materials around the house can be used such as dominoes, cards, magnets, small puzzles, game pieces such as letter tiles and dies.
