Kindly note: This is an ESL friendly class, CEFR level — B1-B2 (intermediate). Please feel free to write me via Outschool email with questions. *** "Be like a postage stamp. Stick to one thing until you get there." -- Josh Billings There are myriad inventions that have changed the world. The tiny postage stamp, affixed to the corner of letters that promote communication, spread ideas, connect like-minded thinkers--is most certainly one of them. In this one-time class, Stamp It!: The Story of Postage Stamps, What They Mean and Why They Matter, we'll explore the fascinating history of this often overlooked innovation, one that represents the pride of nations, are diverse and beautiful tiny works of art, and help connect the world. Stamp It!: The Story of Postage Stamps, What They Mean and Why They Matter, has been created as a companion class to my own Old-Fashioned Letter Writing for Very Modern People: The How and the Why but each class can be taken independently, with no prerequisite. Stamp It!: The Story of Postage Stamps, What They Mean and Why They Matter, will focus on the following: The storied history of the Postage Stamp from the Penny Black to the Inverted Jenny to the famed LOVE stamp How are stamp used differently the world over? How are stamps designed and an examination of the stamps of different nations. Rare and unusual stamps and the lure of stamp collecting Why are stamps important and what do they represent? As I noted in my notes for Old-Fashioned Letter Writing for Very Modern People, "In a world that often moves too fast via the flying fingers of social media, handwritten letter writing is making a resurgence for the best reasons possible. The act of writing letters is an ordered, contemplative act enhancing organizational skills, boosting creativity, expanding vocabulary, and nurturing long term friendships and connection with family. The ability to craft a proper, beautiful letter is an important step towards writing excellent essays and short stories and essential for everyone as they move towards college and the work world." Learning about stamps is part of this story, as stamps--like all artwork--tells stories about the creators, the people, and the country stamps represent. This class, as all my classes, are limited to 6 students for maximum participation to give all students a voice in the classroom. Moreover, optional writing assignments, with specially-created at home activities, games, and ideas, will be provided after class as well to give learners the opportunity both to enhance creative writing and further enhance their letter writing skills for every and always. Stamp It! extends the learning of Old-Fashioned Letter Writing, giving the oft overlooked stamp the acknowledgement and place in history that it richly deserves.
