I am frequently asked about the differences between the Spanish spoken in Spain and the Spanish of Latin America. In Spain, however, it's called Castellano (Castilian), which refers to the Castile province in Spain, where the language is said to have originated. In Latin America, the Spanish language is simply called español (Spanish), as the language was brought by Spaniards colonizers. In Spain, people don’t call the language "español" because there are other languages like Catalan (or Valencian), Galician and Basque which are spoken in Spain and are also considered Spanish languages. While there are distinctions between the varieties of Spanish, the first thing to make clear is that Spanish speakers can all understand each other, whether in Cadiz or Cusco, Salamanca, or Santo Domingo. What do I teach? I teach Latin Spanish or Spanish for Hispanics spoken in Latin America. Certain countries in America, such as Argentina, Uruguay, and El Salvador, conjugate verbs as in Spain, however. The vast majority of Spanish words are universal, but some are not. This interactive direct instruction class has been designed for beginners Spanish speakers whose first language is English or another language. Students will be exposed in multiple ways as they watch a video clip, repeat after me, and will have opportunities to practice using the language in games, songs, and a rhyming poem. Some examples include "teléfono móvil / celular" and "ordenador / computadora", with the second of each pair being the Latin American form. For years, Spain created the Real Academy or La Real Academia Espanola, to clearly establish the rules of written and spoken language. Language is also influenced by its surroundings. This means that the written and spoken language of countries in Latin America and, at least one, in Africa, are modified by their culture. Thus, Spanish opens a door to a beautiful culture in many countries that share one language and we will transition to it using a bridge, which they are called cognates. Cognates are words that pronunciation is the same or similar to Spanish. Students will discover that they knew more Spanish than they thought. It is like meeting relatives that never thought they existed. The student will be monitored for the correctness of grammar and pronunciation, regardless of the accent. This said, yes, there are some differences between the Spanish of Spain and the Spanish spoken in Latin America. There are also differences between the types of Spanish spoken in different parts of Latin America… and in different parts of Spain! For example, "ustedes" is used in the Canary Islands; only the Balearics and mainland Spain use "vosotros". If you only use the Latin American form, you will be understood perfectly well in Spain, however. In fact, people will probably just consider you polite! The variety of accents make Spanish beautifully interesting. Some believe that the Spanish of Madrid is the most important, as that is the home of the Real Academia Española which regulates the language. When I prepare the lesson, I have in mind all these varieties that in the reality they enrich the language. No language is static. My teaching style is serious and formal but relax. I am flexible and patient to accommodate the student's style of learning. Week 1developed by Socrates as the curious questioner of some prominent Athenian interlocutor—in some of his early dialogues is most commonly found within the so-called "Socratic dialogues", which generally portray Socrates engaging in the method and questioning his fellow citizens about moral issues.., and seeking to characterize general characteristics shared by various particular instances. 1.
