Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. In this ongoing course, Ms. C (who recently completed a Masters at Columbia with a focus on Peace & Human Rights Education) will engage learners in lessons, activities, and discussion around global peace & human rights. Each week has a different focus, and learners can choose to attend based on their interests. Week 1 - What are Human Rights? - learn the basics of human rights and the United Nations Charter of Human Rights Week 2 - Human Rights Versus Social Justice - Understand how Human Rights and Social Justice are similar and different Week 3 - Human Rights around the World - Learn some of the ways different regions focus on human rights Week 4 - Human Rights and Refugees - Understand some of the major efforts to support refugees, including the LEGO and Sesame Workshop work in Human Rights Camps around the world Week 5 - Human Rights and Immigration - Understand the rights of migrants around the world Week 6 - Building Peace in Conflict Zones - Learn about the UN Peacebuilding efforts Week 7 - Human Rights Activists - Understand the ways that activists support human rights around the world Week 8 - Fostering Peace in our Communities - Consider ways we can support human rights in our own communities
