This Social Science and Humanities class is a journey into the fascinating world of social studies and humanities. Through interactive online discussions, engaging projects, and diverse resources, we'll investigate how history, geography, and civics have shaped our world.

Each week, we'll delve into a new topic, uncovering diverse perspectives and exploring how different cultures and societies have developed over time.

We will develop valuable skills, broaden understandings of different cultures and societies, and discover a unique voice within a global context.

WHAT WE'LL EXPLORE:

• Unearthing Ancient Civilizations: From deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs to unraveling Greek myths, we'll travel back in time to uncover the secrets of ancient cultures. Students will create art inspired by these civilizations, bringing history to life in their own unique ways.

• Mapping Our World: We'll embark on a virtual journey across continents, learning about diverse landscapes, customs, and traditions. Through maps, diagrams, and creative projects, students will gain a deeper understanding of our interconnected world.

• Investigating Historical Events: We'll dive into pivotal moments in history, from medieval knights to modern-day innovators. Students will use art and critical thinking skills to analyze primary sources and interpret the impact of these events.

• Active Citizenship: We'll explore different forms of government, civic responsibilities, and the importance of being engaged members of our communities. Through discussions and projects, students will discover how they can make a positive impact.

• Global Issues & Creative Solutions: We'll tackle current events and global challenges, empowering students to use their creativity to express their opinions, brainstorm solutions, and inspire change.
Class Structure:

EACH SESSION WILL INCLUDE:

• Interactive Discussions: We'll share ideas, ask questions, and debate different perspectives on the week's topic.

• Creative Visual Projects: Students will use drawing, painting, collage, and other visual techniques to express their understanding of historical and cultural themes.

• Fascinating Investigations: We'll analyze primary sources, historical documents, and works of art to gain a deeper understanding of the past and present.

• Show & Tell: Students will proudly share their creative projects and insights with their classmates, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.

INTERACTION:

This class is highly interactive! We'll have plenty of opportunities for discussion, brainstorming, and sharing ideas. We'll provide guidance and feedback, but also want students to take ownership of their learning and explore their own creative paths.

Every week, we'll post a list of topics, questions, and resources (articles, videos, images) in our Outschool classroom. Additionally, each week will have a specific materials list for the creative projects, with materials that are easy to find.

Exploring Sensitive Topics: This course is designed to be engaging and informative for 9-12 year olds. However, throughout our exploration of history, geography, and civics, we may encounter sensitive topics such as colonialism, inequality, and conflict. We will approach these subjects with age-appropriate sensitivity, focusing on fostering empathy, understanding, and respect for diverse perspectives. Third-Party Tools: We will occasionally utilize the following tools to enhance our learning experience: YouTube: We may use Zoom screen share to show short, educational videos relevant to the week's topic (e.g., a brief video about the pyramids during our Ancient Egypt week). No learner or parent accounts are required. Google Earth: We may use this tool to explore different geographical locations and cultural landmarks. Again, no learner or parent accounts are needed. Canva: We utilize Canva to create engaging presentations. These are shared exclusively through the teacher's Zoom screen share for students to view during class. No learner or parent accounts are required. We will always ensure that any third-party content is age-appropriate and aligns with the educational goals of the course. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or would like to discuss the course content further.
