Dive into the world of social studies where we'll explore places, cultures, and events from around the globe. Our sessions will rotate between economics, history, geography, sociology and civics. OVERVIEW OF CLASS 🌍 Each session will begin with a quick check-in and opportunity to build community. Through engaging slides, videos and activities, the sessions will focus on a main theme for the day. Students may participate how they wish. Students will be offered opportunities to read from the screen, write answers in chat, and use the worksheet packet or a journal to record answers. Some sessions will include crafts or other activities that may require a printer (for the packet), crayons, scissors or glue. Information will be presented at a third-fourth grade level on topics that fit middle school social study standards. CLASS EXPECTATIONS 🤔 I prefer that all students keep their videos on as it helps to build community and helps me guide engagement. Students may mute/unmute as needed for any background noise. Parents, stay off-screen but you can be nearby for any needed assistance. CONTENT 📚 Each week will have a new theme introduced in class with additional activities available outside of class. Students may repeat the class each year as information and activities will be change up. January themes What is a Seasonal Job? How did January get its name? What is the Nobel Peace Prize? How do the hemispheres affect weather? Hidden Figures introduction Martin Luther King, Jr. Inauguration Day February themes Black History Month What is World Hijab Day? The materials will come from an anti-racist, decolonized perspective when speaking about geography and cultural issues. The level of information ranges from third to fourth-grade equivalent and can be modified further as needed. I am a former special education teacher and created and implemented a social studies curriculum for middle school students with disabilities.
