In this one-week summer camp that meets three times, students will explore the science behind sleep. Each class will involve discussion and student interaction as well a viewing slides, videos, and games. No prior knowledge of sleep is needed for this summer camp. Dream journal page is provided for use after camp. Come join us this summer as we delve into our brains to explore sleep! Please note, fewer numbers of students may result in a shortened class time. There will be no refunds issued for a student(s) missing class.

Why do we sleep?
Students will learn the three main reasons that a human body must sleep and explore the area of the brain where each stage of sleep originates from. Students will look at how brainwaves change in each brain area. In this class, students will also explore how much sleep they need and tips for getting better sleep.

Sleep Troubles
In this class, students will learn what a sleep study is and see what diagnostics go into seeing sleep scientifically. We will discover various sleep disorders that occur when good sleep is not achieved and view videos of some of these specific sleep disorders like insomnia, periodic limb movements of sleep, and obstructive sleep apnea.

Science of Dreams
In the last day in our summer camp, we will review sleep disorder treatments and finally, delve inside dreams! When do we dream? Why do we dream? Students will be encouraged to dream journal and share their dreams as we relate common themes in dreams.

I have been the Coordinator for a hospital-based sleep disorders lab for the last 14 years and am a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist. I have worked with thousands of patients over the years running sleep studies and improving sleep disorders. I currently teach to the public on how to improve sleep hygiene and spent 10 years prior to this teaching middle school science.
