The students will learn by listening and repeating phrases of the song. The lyrics are easily searchable online ahead of time if they would like them. The beginning of the class we'll learn the song. The middle of the class we'll discuss what the song is about and what was going on in London (and the U.S.) at that time to inspire the song. We'll talk about how it relates to kids today. Then we'll sing the song again at the end of the class, adding very basic choreography.
The students will learn a not-well-known-song from a very well known musical. They'll learn that history pops up in sometimes unlikely places like move musicals. They'll learn that there are connections between those songs, that time period, and their life today. They'll learn how difficult, (though joyful!) it can be to move one's body at the same time one is singing.

In an ongoing class, we would spend time talking about the power of labeling people, but for this class, I will simply make the substitution of "silly."
While I love teaching music in and of itself, it's even more fun and interesting when you combine it with other subjects, like Suffragette Songs which featuring music that highlights how women got the right to vote; or This Land Is Your...
