"What will be taught?"
In this short story writing course, your child will learn the fundamental elements of storytelling, including plot development, character creation, setting, and dialogue. We will explore how to create compelling narratives, build tension, and craft meaningful conclusions. 
Students will also focus on improving their writing techniques, such as using vivid descriptions, mastering pacing, and finding their unique voice. 
By the end of the course, they will have written and revised a complete short story, gaining valuable skills for both creative writing and personal expression.

"What topics will you cover?"
The course will cover the following key topics:

1. Story Structure: How to organize a story, including the beginning, middle, and end. We will discuss the classic three-act structure and how to create an engaging narrative arc.
   
2. Character Development: Techniques for creating multi-dimensional characters that feel real and relatable. We will explore character motivation, backstory, and conflict.
   
3. Setting and Atmosphere: How to use setting to enhance mood, theme, and plot. Students will practice creating vivid environments that support the story’s emotional tone.

4. Dialogue: Writing natural-sounding dialogue that reveals character and moves the plot forward. We’ll focus on techniques for making conversations feel authentic and engaging.

5. Point of View and Voice: Exploring different narrative perspectives (first person, third person, etc.) and how point of view influences storytelling. We will also work on developing a distinctive writing style.

6. Revising and Editing: The importance of revision in the writing process. Students will learn how to improve their drafts by refining language, structure, and content.

"How is your class structured?"
Each class will be a mix of instruction, discussion, and hands-on writing exercises. We will begin with a brief lecture or demonstration on the topic of the day, followed by individual writing time, where students can work on their stories. Afterward, we’ll have a group discussion, where students share their work and receive constructive feedback from peers and the instructor. This peer review process encourages collaboration, helps students refine their ideas, and boosts their confidence as writers. The class will also include time for one-on-one check-ins to address individual questions or challenges.

I believe in a balanced approach that combines direct instruction with creative freedom. After introducing a concept or technique, I will guide students through exercises designed to apply what they’ve learned in a practical way. These exercises may include prompts, character-building activities, or mini writing challenges that encourage experimentation. I also place a strong emphasis on feedback to help your child grow as a writer. Throughout the course, I will encourage them to take risks and explore new ideas, while also providing the tools to improve and refine their work.
