"Shakespeare is a great enrichment of mind and instruction of conscience." -Charlotte Mason

Filled with humor, unrequited love, drama, revenge, devotion, and family connection, Twelfth Night does not disappoint, and students of this course will receive an in depth, multi-faceted education in this classic Shakespeare comedy.

The main goal of this course is to produce a classroom atmosphere that fosters lively discussions. I strongly believe that conversation is the most successful form of information retention. Additionally, homework assignments throughout the entirety of the course will aim to provide students with further knowledge and skills while also providing opportunities for them to express their creativity, as they delve into the world of Twelfth Night.

In the first portion of our course, we will utilize Charlotte Mason's method of education by reading aloud from a simplified version of the play and allowing the students to provide oral narration, which both demonstrates their information retention and further cements the information into their memories. In the second portion of our course, reading will be done by the students as they have the opportunity to act out the play through dramatized reading.

Classes 1-4: We will begin by learning about Shakespeare’s life and works. Then our focus will shift to familiarizing with the specific plot and characters of Twelfth Night. These goals will be accomplished through reading and narrating a simplified version of the play, having in depth character analysis discussions, and completing character sheets, which will be assigned as homework. Students will complete this portion of the classes by creating their own comic strip which depicts the storyline of the play.

Classes 5-10: We will continue our class with the dramatized reading of Twelfth Night in the original text. Students will each be assigned a part and will read their lines in character each week. We will be digesting and discussing the verbiage of the original text, and students will be aided in their understanding through completing weekly vocab sheets for homework. We will complete our class with each student memorizing an excerpt from the original text to be presented as a recitation during our final class.

I have over 15 years of experience in education from volunteering, homeschooling my own 6 children, teaching in private school settings, and personal tutoring. I have a passion for poetry and theatre, and Shakespeare brings both of these passions together, making it one of my greatest joys to teach. I have had the privilege of teaching Shakespeare to older elementary and middle school students for the past 5 years in both a private school setting and for homeschool co-op classes. One of my favorite things about teaching this subject is seeing uninterested or intimidated students blossom into a thriving performer and admirer of Shakespeare. I'm so excited to share Shakespeare with new students here on Outschool!!
