このクラスで学べること

I started sewing at age 12 and remember the frustrations I had. I built this course to help young beginners navigate through the first steps of learning to sew but in a fun and creative way.

In high school I took a beginner sewing course for a semester but the teacher realized that I was not a beginner, took me aside the whole semester and tutored me personally to fill in the gaps of my self learning.

I've been sewing and have sewed everything from my own clothes, to all of my bridesmaids dresses, to upholstering furniture and making custom costumes.

I have put together a very detailed master supply list with photos in a PDF file that will be attached to the learner's welcome email here on the Outschool student portal.

Learners need a basic sewing machine and its accessories (button hole maker foot, zipper foot etc.) to complete this course.

***I have many parents ask me for machine suggestions here's my opinion.

I definitely wouldn't purchase one of the tiny ones that only does a straight stitch even though yes you can sew on them.

I always suggest that you purchase a name brand machine (like Brother or Singer) just in case your learner doesn't enjoy sewing and you can always offload a name brand easier. Ask around, you may be able to borrow one too for this course.

Learners need a basic sewing machine that has these features to be able to complete this course.
zigzag foot
buttonhole foot
straight and zig zag stiches
preferably several decorative stitches.
a manual (digital or printed)

Overview of other supplies:

Good sharp fabric scissors/shears
Small embroidery scissors
Machine needles for light and medium weight cotton
Plastic or metal bobbins that fit your type of machine
1 yard each: three types of cotton fabric: One solid color and two either contrasting, solid or patterned all in in similar weights
1 yard- Non woven, heavy weight, fusible interfacing
42” of canvas strap (for handles)
Thread that contrasts your solid color but matches your fabrics
(2) 6 inch zippers (contrasting color to the solid color)
Sewing needles for hand sewing
Several buttons to match or contrast with your fabric. Any size will do.
Printer to print out practice sheets, the pattern onto 8x11 paper
Binder or folder for papers
Dressmaker's measuring tape
Dressmaker’s chalk
Pencil
5 inch slider gauge
Dressmaker pins (nice long and sharp ones)
Seam ripper
Iron and ironing board
Scotch tape or clear packing tape
Masking tape or painters tape (any size will do)
Yard stick
Small trash can for threads and scraps
Adult helpers I know it’s super tempting to jump in and try to help your learner during the live class but please allow your learner to do all of the work in class with me. Outschool’s safety policy is for only the learner to be on screen during the live class time, talking and asking questions.

I can’t stress this enough that I want to see the learners be the ones doing all of the measuring, cutting, sewing, ironing, and setting up their own machine as well as navigating through all of the machine stitch settings all by themselves, if at all possible, during the live class time.

This is their time to learn a new skill (including how to ask questions on their own) and if you do the work for them they are not learning themselves. I’ve structured my timing for my class for kids to do the work and not the adults, who of course can do it all much quicker. This is not a competition or a race and I don’t pit learners against each other.

You’re more than welcome to supervise and help them more between classes and while they do their prep work. Please, don’t be tempted to jump ahead on the work as this completely throws off the next class for your learner and they will have to sit there and just watch the others do the work.

You can help them the most by making sure they have all of their supplies, their machine is working properly before each class and the handouts for the class are printed out, reviewed and ready to go as well as their machine manual there for them to look up information themselves.

FYI, if the machine keeps jamming up it’s usually a bobbin issue.

I’ve allotted ample time for them to figure things out on their own during the live 1.5 hour class time. I’ve deliberately structured this course this way because I’m also teaching them invaluable critical thinking skills during this large project, so please don't jump in and save them if they struggle with anything during the live class. It’s ok if they get a bit frustrated while learning something new.

Nothing more rewarding, as an educator, than to see faces light up with joy after accomplishing something they thought was much too difficult to accomplish!

Sometimes, a learner needs to be gently nudged beyond what they think they can do. Tears...
