This interactive class will provide students with a solid foundation for understanding Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Students will read each act of the play, engage in discussion, explore Elizabethan England, and consider the characters and themes of the play. The first class will provide a background, including ancient Greece and its traditions during the time of the play's setting. Class 1: The context for the play and its components will be introduced. This includes Elizabethan England, ancient Greece, the mythical characters of the play, setting, etc. The class will be delivered as a lecture with opportunities for discussion. Class 2: This discussion based class will explore act 1 of the play. Students will read excerpts and discuss characters, atmosphere, plot and themes. Class 3:This discussion based class will explore act 2 of the play. Students will read excerpts and discuss characters, atmosphere, plot and themes. Class 4:This discussion based class will explore act 3 of the play. Students will read excerpts and discuss characters, atmosphere, plot and themes. Class 5:This discussion based class will explore act 4 of the play. Students will read excerpts and discuss characters, atmosphere, plot and themes. Class 6:This discussion based class will explore act 5. Students will read excerpts and discuss characters, atmosphere, plot and themes. A short wrap up talk will be given.
