Learning to read first starts with learning the alphabetic "code". This code means that each written letter represents a letter sound, and once we crack this code, we are ready to start reading! This class specifically targets the skills needed for reading, but in a fun way. All of the activities will be easy to use at home. This class welcomes children with some, little or no alphabetic knowledge. This means it would be suitable for a young learner who is just starting their reading...
5 lessons//5 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Letters i, s, m, f, p & Mnemonic Letter CardsThis week I will introduce the letters i, s, m, f and p using mnemonic letter cards. I will also ask learners to go on a letter sound hunt around the house, demonstrate a letter sound memory game and how to print letters.Week 2Lesson 2Letters t, c, a, b, h, j & Blending Two SoundsThis week I will introduce the letters t, c, a, b, h and j and review last week's letter sounds using picture letter cards for support. I will demonstrate blending two sounds together and how we can segment words into individual sounds using arm tapping or a fidget popper. We will add to our memory game with new letters this week.Week 3Lesson 3Letters n, g, l, o, d, e & Segmenting WordsThis week I will introduce the letters n, g, l, o, d and e and review all previous letter sounds and how to print them. I will demonstrate how we can practice blending two sounds using a toy car, and how we can map the sounds in a word using loose parts such as blocks, beads, buttons, etc. I will also share an auditory activity where we try to identify which word doesn't belong using first sound fluency.Week 4Lesson 4Letters u, k, r, y, z & Blending Three SoundsThis week we will add u, k, r, y and z and review all previous letter sounds. Students will be given a segmenting letter sort game to play as well as a race track letter sound game for practice. I will demonstrate how to blend three sounds together.Week 5Lesson 5Letters w, qu, v, x & High Frequency Decodable WordsThis week we will complete our letter sound toolbox with the final single sounds w, qu, v and x. I will introduce high frequency decodable words with two and three sounds and students will play a memory game. We will practice building words with letter tiles and review all of the letter sounds by printing the letter to match the picture.

Students will be introduced to all 26 letters of the alphabet, including their phoneme (letter sound) and grapheme (printed letter). By the end of this class, students will be beginning to blend and segment 2 or 3 letters, which is the foundation for reading and spelling.
In addition to my primary/junior teaching qualifications, I have also completed the following certificate programs related to reading instruction: - Overcoming Dyslexia, Yale University - Basics of Decoding and Spelling, International Dyslexia Association - Acadience Reading K-6
