The main objective is for learners to understand what mummification is, why it was practiced in Ancient Egypt, and its significance in their cultural and religious beliefs about the afterlife. By the end of the class, students should be able to describe the key steps involved in the mummification process, how mummification techniques evolved over time, and be able to identify and explain the terms related to mummification, such as canopic jars, natron, ankh, and the roles of various gods like Anubis.
I have a degree in Art Conservation in collections care and in Anthropology. I enjoy working with artifacts and helping to tell their stories!
This class talks about what happened in Ancient Egypt with dead bodies. We talk about how a body was prepared in relation to the beliefs around an afterlife. I also show photographs of real mummies in museums. Please make sure your students are ready for these conversations and images!
Class pulls from a large variety of sources. Primary sources include the mummies and artifacts themselves. These stories and collections can be found from different museums around the world including:
The Egyptian Museum in Cairo
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization
The British Museum in London
The Smithsonian Institute
The American Museum of Natural History
Penn Museum

Secondary sources include a large variety of books including:
The Egyptian Book of the Dead translated by Egyptologist E.A Wallis Budge
The Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt by Helen Strudwick
Egyptology: Search for the Tomb of Osiris by Emily Sands
Mummies Made in Egypt by Aliki
Inside Out Egyptian Mummy: Unwrap an Egyptian mummy layer by layer! By Lorraine Jean Hopping
DK Eyewitness Books: Mummy
