CLASS SYNOPSIS
7th, 8th, and 9th grade students will enjoy the romance of the Valentines Day season by studying this classic book by F. Scott Fitzgerald through analysis, discussion and nonfiction texts

OVERVIEW
    • This is a read-and-discuss course. Discussion revolves around analysis based on the chapters read.  Content listed below “CONTENT”
    • Students will read 3 chapters prior to class each class
    • The class will engage in analytical discussion revolving around instructor prompts/questions

CONTENT 
    • The Great Gatsby provides several opportunities for rich analytical discussion.
    • Literary element instruction (as opportunity presents itself from the text)
    • In order to develop a well-rounded analysis of the novel, students will be instructed on the biographical information of the author (F. Scott Fitzgerald), as well as the historical setting in which the novel was written in (Modern).  Students will create connections between this information and the content of the novel throughout the course. 
    • Class discussion will revolve around the following novel-centered themes:
        ‣ Wealth
        ‣ Privilege
        ‣ Manipulation
        ‣ Love and obsession
        ‣ Greed 
        ‣ The American Dream
        ‣ Hope

TEACHING STYLE
    • I want my students to discuss, interact, and learn from each other! Every chance I get,  I will encourage them to respond to other’s ideas
    • I hope to facilitate conversation, protect think-time, and pose questions that provoke deeper thought based on the central text
    • I hope that students feel as welcomed to think as they are challenged in their thinking. 
    • While I will challenge students to think deeply, their perspective will always be encouraged and celebrated
    • I love interacting with my students!  I will be apart of the conversation as well 😁
    • Lecture-style lessons will be taught to ensure all students comprehend concepts and themes

Class 1: Introductions, goals, instructions, and F. Scott Fitzgerald Biography
Class 2: Ch 1-3
Class 3: Ch 4-6
Class 4: Ch 7-9

NOTE: This novel is intense and mature on several occasions. The following subjects will be approached with maturity and an educational perspective. SEXUAL CONTENT • Extramarital affairs are referenced and important to the plot, though are never depicted • Sex is referenced throughout never explicitly VIOLENCE • A woman is hit by a car. She is described briefly but graphically • A man abuses his lover by punching her in the face. This is depicted as an immoral act by an antagonist RACISM SEXISM AND SOCIAL NEGATIVITIES • Sexism • Racism towards black characters • An antagonist mentions the titles of several white supremacy books he enjoys • Antisemitism (including usage of the word k*ke) (NOTE: racial slurs will NOT be read aloud and will be used as opportunities to identify the regressive nature of the setting of the book and characters) • Characters are irresponsible, shallow, and obsessive PROFANITY • The word k*ke is used • The word b*tch is used (to refer to a dog) DRUGS/ALCOHOL • Consumption of alcohol is depicted • Drunkenness is depicted throughout, usually bringing about negative behavior • Smoking cigarettes is depicted throughout
