"What if?" That's the question that begins every great fantasy and science fiction story. How real the people and the world feel are what really draws in readers, and that emotional connection makes them want to read more. "Magical realism" is a type of fiction storytelling that uses story details that are familiar to help the story feel grounded, and like it could be happening in hidden places in this world, if only we could find the way inside. Examples of this would be Doctor Who, Warrior Nun, Percy Jackson, The Chronicles of Narnia, and most superhero stories. We'll explore ideas for adding realistic details to fantastic stories to help flesh-out characters and story worlds. We'll also be talking about "writer's block" and how to get unstuck. Please be prepared to take notes!

I've been a professional writer for almost 30 years, including screenplays, comic books, novels, and non-fiction articles and television. I've also been a semi-finalist in a number of writing competitions, including Stan Lee's "The Seekers" sponsored by MTV. Comic book and television writers have praised my work, noting that I'm especially skilled at crafting realistic dialog and characters.
