Hello, and welcome to "Rock Falls, Landslides, Avalanches, and More: An Introduction to Mass Wasting"! In this class, students will have the opportunity to explore many types of mass wasting. What is mass wasting, you may be asking! Well, it is defined as the downslope movement of Earth material. Yes, that includes the deadly avalanches, fascinating rock falls, volcanic lahars, and much more. We will examine six different types of mass wasting events, and use pictures and videos to explore real examples from all around the world. We will also explore triggers that cause these mass wasting events, and students will even have the chance to act as a town council to determine how to protect their mountain town from the dangers of mass wasting! This is a lecture-style lesson, supplemented with several example videos and ample opportunity for discussion and questions. A good internet connection is recommended due to the number of videos in this lesson. Students do not need to have any prior knowledge to participate in this course! After the class, the lesson slides will be provided to the students as well.

Hello everyone! My name is Annette and I'm a teacher originally from Toronto, Canada, but currently located in Nicaragua.
I have both passion AND experience teaching a wide variety of science topics. I developed an intense interest in geological and biological sciences from a very young age, and earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours Biology) and a Bachelor of Education, both from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I have two years' in-school experience teaching Geography, Biology, and General Science for grades 7-13 in Canada and England, and three years of experience teaching English as a Foreign Language online. However, I've been working with children in a variety of other settings for over 13 years! Here on Outschool, I offer a range of science classes and courses for approximately 10-16 year olds. I am also queer and I'm VERY passionate about providing a safe, inclusive, and welcoming class environment for all of my students. My classroom is a place for all who need a safe space to learn.
*Please note:

-Absolutely NO homophobia, transphobia, racism, or bullying of any kind will be tolerated in my classes. Students who display such behaviour will be immediately removed from class with no refund.
When I'm not teaching, I like reading books, doing yoga, hiking, and spending time with my husband and my cat, Loki. I'm passionate about living a sustainable lifestyle, and I love cooking healthy vegetarian meals. I also love travelling!
