This class will support elementary-aged students with extra reading, writing, and grammar practice. I can focus on teaching and helping specific skills if you have requests or a combination lesson as described below: Read a short story together, then answer the comprehension questions to check for understanding of the text. Vocabulary words in the text will be discussed, and we will use context clues and inferencing skills to figure out unknown words. Next, students will have a short writing assignment that gives them a specific topic about the text to write about. The writing will focus on using correct grammar, including punctuation, capitalization, verb tense, etc. During this class, students can sharpen their comprehension skills by reading different genres of stories. In addition, vocabulary, grammar, and writing will be reinforced. Hello, my name is Kathleen Bernath Jenkins and I am a recently retired elementary public school teacher in Missouri. I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in differentiated instructional methods. Most recently, I have taught fourth-grade students the core academic skills: reading, grammar, writing, math, science, and social studies.
I have a passion for teaching children the skills needed for them to be successful citizens. I believe all children can achieve success at school by differentiating instructional methods, which allows for individual growth and expression. My approach to teaching is to focus on best practices, those proven to be successful across all educational settings: teacher modeling and interaction with students, setting clear objectives at the start of each lesson, encouraging group participation, and debriefing together at the close of a lesson.
