Calling all readers - struggling and thriving alike! Do you have a struggling reader who needs support with improving their comprehension? Or, is your reader thriving and would like an opportunity to continue perfecting their work? Well, this is the class for you! With 1:1 guidance and support from me, this course is designed for readers to learn about and practice all major components of reading comprehension. These skills are: Antonyms Character Traits Context Clues Facts and Opinions Identifying an Author’s Purpose Lessons Learned Literary Language Making Connections Predicting Questioning Reflection Sequence of Events Story Elements Summarizing Synonyms Understanding Themes Visualization Vocabulary The class structure will be similar each class. The learners and I will meet whole group where we will read a shared text. For week 1 and 2 of the month, we will be reading and working through fictional texts and assignments. For the next two weeks of the month, we will be reading and working through nonfiction. Learners will have the opportunity to practice the skill with me and ask any questions that they may have. Then, learners will go into their own breakout room and work on the assignment of the day (see below). When they are working independently, I will check in and confer with each student in order to support them as needed. I believe that through 1:1 attention, I am cultivating positive relationships and helping the learner on whatever specific need(s) they have. At times, students may work together in partnerships to support teamwork. At the end of class, we will always come back together and share out our progress. Whenever I teach, I work to ensure that my lessons are engaging, clear, concise, thorough and fun! I believe that students learn best when they feel comfortable with a teacher and are enjoying themselves. I always enjoy starting class with a quick game/activity about the topic at hand! I will be teaching with the expectation that students have experience with developing sentences. Welcome! My name is Mrs. G and I am SO excited for the opportunity to work with children around the world through Outschool. I have a strong passion for giving children the best education possible and to make learning FUN! Ever since I began teaching, I feel incredibly fulfilled and I wake up excited every morning to go to school, NOT work. Teaching has never felt like a job to me, but a lifestyle; something that is just a part of who I am.
Through the platform of Outschool, I look forward to putting my own creativity to use and design fun, educational experiences. As of now, I am going to be teaching through the creative avenue of "escape rooms". Students will enter the fictional world of the STAR Students (Sophie, Trey, Anthony, and Rosa) of Galaxy Elementary School. These four students need the help of Outschool students to solve various mysteries that will be uncovered through clues. The only way to receive clues is by solving math problems and/or answering ELA questions. Outschool students will join the STAR students on an educational adventure during each one of my classes!!
I also have a strong passion for writing and specifically, supporting students by teaching strategies to help improve their writing. I love helping developing authors find their voice, creativity, and passion for writing!
A little bit about my professional background: I have experience as a third grade teacher of students with an IEP, Gifted and Talented students, and everyone in between. That being said, I am comfortable teaching a wide variety of grades and ages. While teaching, I served as my school's literacy and technology coach. This means I supported my colleagues as an instructional coach by providing professional development, coming into their classrooms to help their instruction, and opening my classroom doors for observation.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and Psychology, a minor in Early Childhood Education and a certificate in Leadership. In 2020, I also obtained a Master's degree in Educational Leadership with a supervisor and principal certificate.
In September, I gave birth to a baby girl! I am currently on maternity leave but I miss teaching so much that I am excited to have the opportunity to teach online!
