Once students reach 3rd grade the focus of reading begins to shift in the curriculum. They are not learning to read, instead they are reading to learn. For students from 3rd grade and up who struggle with comprehension, reading becomes a frustrating and daunting task. Even if they are able to call the correct words, they struggle with putting meaning to print. In this ongoing  course, students will have an opportunity to work on strategies to help them feel successful and improve their reading comprehension. 

During class we will:
* Begin with greetings/icebreakers
* Introduce the topic and build background
* Introduce the vocabulary in context
* Introduce the comprehension strategy and the purpose for reading
*Share read the text with comprehension checks
* Practice fluency and prosody (independent reading)
* Respond to the text with a reflection question

The learners will be able to use strategies to improve their fluency and comprehension by building background, expanding their vocabulary, participating in shared and independent readings, practicing reading with expression (prosody), and responding to the text in writing.

Students will need a notebook for their written response or to make sure they bring paper and pencil to the class sessions.
