What IS reading comprehension? Research shows that it is more than just decoding the words on the page. Word recognition is only one part of the process. It also involves the integration of automatic sight word recognition, vocabulary, and language comprehension. Good readers start with word recognition but immediately move to language comprehension. In this course, we will study several reading strategies designed to boost comprehension. The strategies are listed below: Word...
The learner will be able to use reading strategies to understand and evaluate various texts about famous and popular musical artists.
. In this five-part series, the student will use leveled reading strategies to learn about composers, performers and/or musical genres. The student will have the opportunity to listen to samples of the music. Perhaps, we'll even sing along. Educational Experience- I have a Bachelor's degree in Education from Appalachian State University. While the majority of my educational classes at Appalachian were not focused on music theory or composition courses, I did take several classes in classroom music, in which I had to play the guitar, as well as use children's songs to create a lesson. It expanded my love of music and increased my respect for those who play instruments and those who teach children to play instruments. Lived Experience- Typically, a child's first language is music. Before they speak, they sing. They move to the beat with their arms and legs. They smile at the musician, whether it be a parent or the radio. My own love of music stirs my heart to move and sing. While I don't have a degree in music, this subject has been an integral part of my life. From my very first Jackson Five album to my most current iPhone playlist of songs, I absolutely love music. I love to read about the early lives of musicians and how their struggles and triumphs influenced their music. I like reading and learning about the historical context surrounding the artist and the song. . Also, I enjoy podcasts and documentaries about these famous musicians. I have been going to musical concerts and plays practically all of my life and will dance and "sing" along to my heart's content. I am especially fond of Aretha Franklin, one of the artists listed. In the city where I live, there is a National Black Theater Festival every other year. One of the festival's most popular plays was about the life and songs of Aretha Franklin. While I knew about her most famous song, "Respect," I did not know that her musical career began in the church choir- it was awe-inspiring to see just where her soulful voice originated from.
