In this class, learners will have a chance to express themselves through visual and dramatic arts, entertain themselves and their family, and in the end, will have a portable puppet theater that can be easily adapted to new stories and dramatic play. Learning will happen through short instructional videos, illustrated instructional outlines and classroom messages. I will post instructions in the beginning of each week, and check in throughout the week to see the progress of the projects. There will be additional options given at each step to make sure the show created by your learner is truly unique. Week 1: Introduction, choosing your show and creating your characters - stick puppets. Week 2: Creating your theater from a shoe box. Optional: decorating the outside of your theater and making a curtain. Set design - the setting for your show. Week 3: Changing the costumes of your stick puppets. Optional: puppets that move by wiggling their arms and legs - marionettes. Week 4: Performing your show and playing with your puppet theater. This is a flexible schedule class. There will be no live meetings, but frequent interaction between the teacher and the learners is expected. I will be posting videos, instructions, photos and discussion prompts in the classroom several times each week, Monday-Wednesday. All learners will respond with their own posts, pictures and videos as they are completing their projects. Some steps of the project involve cutting, and I always recommend parental guidance and supervision for that. You will know best whether your learner is able to cut safely. Providing a safe place to work, and necessary materials is another thing for parents to pay attention to. Parents are also encouraged to participate in this project and have fun together with their learners, if they'd like!

A large shoebox or an equivalent size cardboard box, cardstock paper or old manila folders, sketch paper or copy paper, plastic straws or wooden skewers, scotch tape or masking tape, scissors, pencil, eraser, markers, crayons or colored pencils. For the past 15 years, I have been a teaching artist at multiple programs and venues. Finally, five years ago I opened my own art studio for children, Canvas and Crayon. My curriculum, developed through many years of work, is a unique blend of teaching both technique and self-expression. I believe in providing my young students with all the knowledge they need to express their own ideas. Every year my students bring me joy and satisfaction as they grow and their skills develop. I also treasure the development of community as students work alongside one another and get to meet peers with similar interests and talents.
